Fatshark’s Warhammer End Times: Vermintide has made the leap from PC to console, and we’re taking a brief look at the Xbox One version.
When we reviewed Vermintide last year, we were pleasantly surprised by how well the game had come together. It may be a bit too much like Left 4 Dead for some people, but we haven’t had a new game in that franchise for years now – and Vermintide does a great job at creating a similar experience in a completely different setting.
The Warhammer universe is, of course, a great fit with a game like this. The board games and many videogame adaptations have shown us that character and party balance is important, and Vermintide is no different. We expanded on this in our PC review last year already, but it’s no different for the Xbox One version: this is a game best enjoyed when playing it cooperatively.
We’ll spare you some of the details that were already discussed in our original review, and look at how well the game plays on Microsoft’s console. Visually, the game has no trouble rendering the dark world of the city of Ubersreik – though performance problems pop up every now and then. This can best be seen when things get hectic and an onslaught of enemies suddenly storm you. It’s not nearly enough to ruin the experience – Vermintide is still excellent – but it does make you think this is a console conversion that could have used a bit more polish.
Gamepad controls work very well though, and are especially well suited towards melee situations – which depending on your choice of character there can be a lot of. So if you’re an Xbox One gamer without access to a PC, you should count yourself lucky that Vermintide is available now. The Xbox One release even contains the DLC addons that PC owners had to buy separately, making this a package that offers excellent value for money if you’re interested in team-based games.
